Salvage is a department focused on mining and slaying monsters to enrich yourself and the station. The main spots you will mine at the beginning of the shift are asteroids floating around the station, as well as asteroids you can pull in via the salvage magnet. Later in the shift, consider searching for the dangerous (and valuable!) vgroid, or risk being left behind on an alien planet during an expedition.

It is recommended to stay near your team so that you can help each other when attacked by hostile fauna.

Points

Besides giving the station materials, mining awards you mining points when you drop off your resources at the ore processor. You only receive mining points if the ore processor is linked to a silo, be sure its linked before dropping off your hard earned ore! These points can then be spent at the salvage vending machine for equipment that is useful for mining. Make sure to pick up some enhanced gear before heading off to a difficult area.

Mining

Pickaxes (when wielded), drills, and protokinetic accelerators, as well as a few others, are capable of destroying asteroid rocks, causing them to drop any resources they are holding. Your locker will spawn with these items as well as an ore bag that can be toggled on to automatically pick up nearby ore.

Tips:

  • Wideswings (right click by default) can hit 2 or 3 rocks at a time, greatly increasing your mining speed.
  • Bananium, bluespace crystals, and diamonds are the most valuable ore, if you need more mining points focus on these!
  • If the station is low on a specific resource, consider checking if the salvage magnet has an asteroid with those resources available, if you need more bluespace crystals or diamonds, the small red asteroids are usually your best bet.

Space POIs

Floating around the station, are various places you can investigate and salvage for ore and various loot. You can see them on the mass scanner as well as the shuttle console

Color Meaning Notes
Red Asteroids
Blue Wrecks Very few (if any) ore, but contains randomly generated loot.
Yellow Misc. Shuttles, pre-made structures, or the object from the magnet, usually better than blue ones.

Magnet

The salvage magnet lets you pull in large asteroids or special wrecks. These asteroids usually have more ore, but more empty space, taking longer to mine. The menu lets you see what resources will generate on it, but it will not feature rare ores like bluespace crystals or diamonds.

For wrecks, there are two types: free wrecks will be similar to the blue ones available floating in space, while the ones that cost 1000 mining points will typically be more special, such as a waffle restaurant, or a library. In either case, there will be weak hostile mobs, typically carp and sharkminnows.

VGroid

Spotted on the mass scanner as a giant red asteroid, often larger than the station itself. This is where you will spend most your time if you want to maximize points. The majority of vgroid will be red rocks that drop ore and rarely smuggler crates. However, a sizable portion will also be a dungeon of randomly generated rooms, hostile mobs, and various loot. Connected to this dungeon is a pathway devoid of rocks, this section of VGroid features an extremely large amount of mobs, and next to no loot, do not enter unprepared.

Hostile Mobs:

  • Goliath: Has a ranged attack that knocks you down and stuns you for several seconds, can stunlock if there are multiple goliaths but this attack does no damage and can't hit you if you are floating in space. When butchered, drops goliath plates for making the goliath hardsuit.
  • Hivelord: Spawns small minions to attack you, when butchered drops a piece of meat that heals you when eaten.

If you see a fellow salvager in trouble, help them out! If they are stunned or crit you can drag them (ctrl+click by default) to safety away from whatever is hurting them.

Smuggler Crates

Semi-Rarely while mining, you may come across one of these crates. The easiest way to open them is to hit them with your mining instrument until they break, however they can also be hacked with a screwdriver and multitool. Each crate includes one "unique" item, as well as a bunch of rolls from a randomized table. Some crates will also include a syndicate item, and themed loot.

Expeditions

Through the expedition console, you can print out a disk that when placed in your shuttle console, shows you a planet you can warp to. These will be filled with hostile mobs as well as riches. After 15 minutes, your shuttle will automatically leave with or without you, pay attention to the music change and radio messages giving you updates to your time left. From the console, there is a choice of planets as well as information each, such as its wildlife, atmosphere, or temperature. Carp are typically easier wildlife to deal with than xenos. Once on the planet, a radio message informs you of where the dungeon is, the primary structure filled with mobs and various items. You can head that direction, or go mining on the surface.

Being an Antagonist

You have access to the cargo lathe, and cargo orders, same as all cargo workers. However, you also get access to a shuttle, and the station's exterior airlocks, letting you possibly form stashes or bases on far away locations.

You can occasionally find useful objects on the VGroid, such as the tanky maxim suit, but this comes with the cost of time away from the station, and your objectives.
