Avatel-Ran
Avatel-Ran is the homeworld of the harpies.
History
Avatel-Ran is a small, lush world orbiting its home star of Avatel-Lu. While at first, Ran may seem like an ordinary jungle world, the abundance of ferrous metals that formed it, as well as its naturally dense atmosphere, create the perfect conditions for content spanning subterranean electrical storms. These electrical maelstroms provide unique conditions, mainly an abundance of nitrogen availability in the soil, which causes EXTREME biological flourishing, at all levels.
On this world of abundance, life began to compete not for available nutrients, but for space. The jungles of Avatel fully coat the world, and reach kilometers into the sky. So available was food, that predation evolved not as a method of caloric intake, but as a method of culling competitor species. Even the oceans of Avatel-Ran were not safe from the flourishing, as they became choked by lattices of colossal buoyant vines. But by far, the most impressive of Ran's overgrown biomes is the Highland forests, where the namesake Ran Redwood trees stretch five kilometers into the sky, and measure one kilometer in diameter at the base. These forests form the cities of the harpies, as the insides of these trees make their villages and cities, traditionally in the upper half of the tree.
Eventually, a new predator evolved to tackle the endless thrum of Avatel. Unlike any other, this creature was unusually violent, possessing an unstoppable drive to hunt to extinction anything that contested the canopies it called its own. Not only this, that species also actively culled the jungles, killing off all but select titans of the jungle, letting them grow into standing monoliths in which to make their nests. Evolution had created the harpy. interestingly, biological research has actually proven it is not a violent urge that caused harpies to dominate their world, but instead a constant hunger, and a tendency to snap attention onto any small moving objects; biologically caused mainly by the harpies high energy level and short memory.
