Hacking is pretty simple and is done only to either get into places you shouldn't be in or to get items you shouldn't have.

How to Hack Vending Machines

The hacking GUI for vending machines

Hacking a vending machine is the simplest form of hacking, and a great way to learn the basics. Here is the essential rundown:

  1. Use a Screwdriver to Open the maintenance panel.
  2. Using wirecutters, click the vending machine, the menu for hacking should now be open.
  3. cut the wires until the lights for "MNGR" or "ACC" is blinking.
  4. You can use the wirecutters on cut wires to restore them, in case you need to undo something.

Each wire corresponds to a different function, as indicated by the lights and labels above them. When a wire is cut, its function will be disrupted and the light for that function will blink instead of staying lit. The most immediately useful are cutting the access function, which removes the need to have a proper ID and access to use the vending machine (if one is required), and the Manager function, which enables a few new useful items to appear in the vending machine. If you snip the power wire, you will be shocked. The damage is minimal, and it can be entirely avoided by wearing insulated gloves. While the function of each wire is randomized every shift, the wires will be the same for every vending machine during that shift. After you find the wires you need, take note of them so you can quickly hack other vending machines by cutting the same wires!

Hacking Doors

Hacking GUI for airlocks

Now that You've learned how to hack vending machines, Doors are next on the agenda. They will typically require more advanced tools to hack them: insulated gloves and a multitool.

These contain Two power wires, if one is cut, the door will shock people who walk into it. Cutting both wires entirely remove power from the door, letting it be opened and closed with a crowbar. Alternatively, a multitool used on either of the power wires will turn off power for a few seconds, letting you open it with a crowbar and get to the other side. In either case, insulated gloves are required, these use more voltage than vending machines!

Doors from the same department will have the same function for each wire, but doors from different departments will have different functions for each wire. Learn a department's wire locations from an out of the way door first, before you go fiddling around with them in public.

High-Security Doors

Some doors, such as the blue Command doors, will be have tighter security. After opening the maintenance panel, you will need to use a welding tool, and then a crowbar to remove the steel plate blocking access to the wires. After this, they will function exactly the same as normal doors.
